DisappointingDec 14, 2006
By C. Abbott Purchased five of these sets thinking they would be fun stocking stuffers. Wanting to check out what I purchased, I opened one of the five. The geodes are tiny (not as pictured). It was like breaking open dirt-clods... that have a small empty space inside... but not crystals. Maybe it was a "dud" box, but will probably be returning the other four.

Geodes a bust!May 21, 2007

I bought two sets. Great idea and my grandkids liked it the excitement of breaking them to see what was inside. The problem was that only two of the geodes were as large as a small walnut the other three were about the size of a nickel with nothing to see inside. Very disappointing.

Interesting fun!Sep 11, 2010

Well, I read the other reviews for this item. And I agree with the bad reviews and I agree with the good reviews also! If your looking for huge beautiful geodes forget it. They are really small, golf ball size. But all of them had some crystals in them. Nothing special to me as an adult. But...to my grandson, who is 8 and his brother who is 10, they were the most fun they have ever had! He and his brother were busy for an hour outside stuffing one after another into a sock and hitting them with a hammer! Then they would pick up each small piece and study it, and they would sort them by which on they thought had the best crystal in it. They LOVED it! This toy is about as much fun as you can imagine it would be for two little boys! They got to break stuff with a hammer, that in it's self for two small boys, is worth it's weight in gold. But as an extra bonus, there were cool looking crystals inside of the rocks!! You may not think this is a great toy if your an adult, but I guarantee, for children it's definitely great fun for a kid! The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because the way they advertise it you'd think your going to get these huge beautiful crystals! Your not. And I feel that it's kind of a lot of money for a few small rocks. But then, I'm looking at it through an adults eyes. So if you can remember what it was like as a child and try to see things through their eyes you won't go wrong with this little box of wonderful fun! I can still hear them downstairs right now, still arguing over which one has the best crystals! LOL

Awesome learning experienceJan 12, 2007
By FuzzyMeow My son and I had a blast opening the geodes and finding the crystals inside. You must use an old sock and a hammer to break them open (yes, the sock will have holes in it when you are done). When we opened the box I was surprised to see how little the stones were, but they really pack the crytals! All the rocks in our box had crystals.
It made learning fun as I explained to him how geodes are created. Kids that are into hands-on science stuff will just love these.
Not only are these worth the money for memory making, they make great keepsakes for the treasure box, too.

Geodes or rocks?May 13, 2007

The ten geodes were about the size of cocktail meatballs and three of them simply crumbled into sandy gravel. My grandkids did have fun trying to smash the rocks with a hammer and a couple geodes had a tiny amount of quartz or some sparkly mineral inside. I certainly would not spend [...] on them again.
